"James McCabe"

THIS IS AN ENGLISH BRASS CASED DOUBLE CHAIN FUSEE CARRIAGE CLOCK IN A PATINATED (DARK BROWN) FINISH**.  THE PATINIZING WAS NO DOUBT DONE TO AVOID THE NEED FOR CONSTANT POLISHING UNDER MILITARY CONDITIONS.

ENGLISH CARRIAGE CLOCK CASE STYLES VARY GREATLY FROM THEIR LESS EXPENSIVE FRENCH COUNTERPARTS,  AND ARE GENERALLY LARGER AND MORE ROBUST.  THE CASE MEASURES 4" x 3" x 7".  THIS CASE CAN BE BEST DESCRIBED  AS AN ANGLAISE CASE WITH ROUNDED CORNERS.  THERE THE SIMILARITY ENDS!

THIS CLOCK WAS MADE AND SOLD BY THE JAMES McCABE FIRM AT THE ROYAL EXCHANGE IN LONDON, ON THE 30TH OF APRIL 1857.  IT SOLD TO THE RICHARDSON BROS. (LATE J.H. RICHARDSON), AND IS SERIAL #2916, AS INDICATED ON THE DIAL, THE BACK OF THE MOVEMENT AND STAMPED INTO THE ORIGINAL KEY.

IT'S INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT JAMES DIED IN 1811, AND THEREFORE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MANUFACTURE OF THIS CLOCK.  THE McCABE FAMILY CARRIED ON IN THE CLOCK BUSINESS UNTIL 1883, WHEN THE FIRM FINALLY CLOSED.

INCLUDED WITH THE CLOCK IS THE ORIGINAL SALES INVOICE THAT SHOWS THAT THE CLOCK WAS SOLD WITH A FITTED MOROCCO (LEATHER) CASE.  IT NOW HAS A FITTED OAK CAMPAIGN STYLE CASE WITH BRASS CORNERS AND A BRASS HANDLE ON TOP.  IT IS UNKNOWN WHEN THIS WOODEN CASE WAS MADE,BUT DUE TO THE PRESUMED MILITARY USE, IT MAY HAVE BEEN FITTED AT THE TIME OF THE SALE, OR JUST AFTER.  IT'S BEEN NOTED IN HISTORICAL JOURNALS THAT ALMOST ALL McCABE  CLOCKS WERE FITTED EITHER OAK OR MAHOGANY TRAVEL CASES, AND WE WILL NEVER KNOW WHY THE SALES INVOICE SPECIFIED A MOROCCO TRAVEL CASE.

THE DELICATELY ENGRAVED AND SILVERED DIAL HAS ROMAN NUMERALS, FLEUR DE LYS HANDS AND IS INSCRIBED "JAMES McCABE, ROYAL EXCHANGE, LONDON, 2916".

THE 8 DAY SPRING WOUND MOVEMENT IS A DOUBLE CHAIN FUSEE, STRIKING THE HOURS AND 1/2 HOURS ON A TUNED SPIRAL GONG, AND WITH A REPEAT BUTTON THAT STRIKES THE CLOSEST HOUR WHEN PRESSED.  THE REPEAT BUTTON COMES THROUGH THE UPPER GLASS RATHER THAN THE CASE, THIS UNUSUAL FEATURE IS A McCABE TRADEMARK.

THE PATINIZED BRASS CASE IS FITTED WITH 1/4" BEVELED GLASS ON THE TOP AND SIDES AND VERY THIN GLASS IN THE FRONT.  THE REMOVABLE BACK PANEL  IS EQUIPPED WITH CLOSABLE APERTURES FOR WINDING AND SETTING, AND THE MOVEMENT CAN BE REGULATED AND THE STRIKE SILENCED WITHOUT REMOVING THE PANEL.  THE PANEL IS PATINIZED TO MATCH THE CASE.

THE OUTER SOLID OAK, CAMPAIGN STYLE TRAVEL CASE IS WONDERFULLY MADE, HAS A CRACK IN THE FRONT AND SOME SCRATCHES, BUT IS IN SOUND AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, AS IS THE NON-REMOVABLE VERY THIN GLASS FRONT GLASS.  THE  DOOR LOCK ON TOP IS STAMPED BY THE MAKER, J.T. LEEDS, 200 BOND ST. W, (LATE J. BRAMAH, 124 PICCADILLY).  THE OUTER CASE MEASURES 5.25" x 4.75" x 7.50 TALL.  IT HAS A MATCHING REMOVABLE OAK PANEL (STORED INSIDE THE CASE) TO PROTECT THE FRONT GLASS WHILST TRAVELING.

***Patinizing brass.  This was a processed for darkening brass or bronze, to add a permanent patina that did not need polishing.  This was done via several processes, all involving acids. both liquid and fumes.

More pictures available on request.
